On Tuesday, May 4th, 2021, our beloved wife, mother, sister, “Mimi” passed away at home at the age of 90.
Helen was born in Roxton, Texas on June 29th, 1930 to Sara and Louie Wood. She attended Beauty School in 1946, and in 1947 she met the Love of her life, Thomas “Tommy” Galbreath. Tommy and Helen married in San Angelo on May 3rd, 1947 in a beautiful backyard wedding at the home of her parents.
Helen and Tommy raised 2 daughters, Brenda and Kathy. Helen always had a passion for home and family and there was nothing she enjoyed more. She was an excellent cook, and everyone loved her delicious home made pies, chicken n dumplings and home made biscuits to name a few. Helen was a meticulous housekeeper, and she was nicknamed “The Vacuum Queen”. Seriously… you could eat off her floors. She had a very funny dry wit about her that we all loved.
At age 42, she returned to school and in 1970 she graduated from the San Angelo School of vocational Nursing. She worked at Shannon Hospital on 3Ac for several years, then accepted a position as an LVN Office Nurse, working with Don Armstrong MD in ENT/allergy until his retirement.
Upon retirement, she and her husband Tommy purchased a 20-acre tract on the Concho River in Carlsbad, Texas fondly known as “The Ranch”. The two loved working, improvising, and raising sheep and goats. Many fond memories remain for all the kids and grandkids, cousins, and all extended family.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy in 1995, later in years her brother, Howard Wood, brother Harold Wood and sister-in-law Dot Wood and special nephew, Darren Sudnick.
Helen is survived by her daughters, Brenda Cromwell, Kathy Peel and son in law Dennis Peel. Also, grandsons Robert Cromwell, James Cromwell and wife Heather, Tommy Cromwell and wife Veronica. Granddaughter, Lindsey Bird and husband Tony, grandson Justin Bagdon and wife Aline. Sisters Darlene Fisher and husband Gene and Patricia Ogden and husband Dave. As well as special nieces and nephews Rebecca Weatherford and husband Robert, Harold Wood Jr. and wife Nike. Mimi’s great-grandchildren Caroline Sherrod, Michael Cromwell, Bridger and Coulter Bird, Bruin and Parker Bagdon and Thomas Reid Cromwell.
Graveside Services are being held on Friday, May 7, 2021 at 11:00 am, with Gary Allen officiating at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.
The family would like to thank Dr. Robert Prieto, Dr. Vayden Stanley and Dr. Brenda Owens. Also, pharmacist Sara Lummus, Nurse Myra and CNA Sam.
