She was born July 30, 1947 to parents Zack and Evelyn Sanders in Cleburne, Texas. Roberta spent part of her childhood residing in California, but later returned to the Fort Worth, Texas area in her early teens. She married her devoted husband, Thomas Bruce, in September of 1965. She worked in several positions in retirement homes and nursing facilities, eventually being certified as an activity director. Roberta enjoyed working for years at several locations, touching the lives of fellow employees, volunteers, and residents. Around 1975, she felt the call to become a children’s minister. Countless children and adults alike were impacted by her gifts in evangelism and creative arts as she and her family traveled throughout Texas and surrounding states. She not only trained her children, but also mentored many future leaders in areas of ministry. In 1982, she was appointed pastor at the Church of God in Shamrock, TX. Over the next 4 decades, together with her husband, she pastored churches in Amarillo, Hereford, San Angelo, and Abilene, TX, eventually returning to make San Angelo her home. Roberta loved doing anything creative, from making music to making puppets. Baking, sewing, painting, she enjoyed it all. She was blessed to be loved by several pets over the years, leaving fun-loving Peanut to be spoiled by her husband. She was a member and First Lady at New Beginnings Church of God.
Mrs. Bruce was survived by her husband Pastor Thomas Bruce, her son Pastor Joe Bruce and wife Fondee, her daughters Melissa Jackson and husband Brent, of Weatherford, TX, and Tammy Eubank and husband Kirby of San Angelo, sixteen grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren.
Friends and loved ones will celebrate her life at a memorial service, Saturday, December 26, 2020, at 2:00 pm, at New Beginnings Church of God, located at 2900 N. Oakes in San Angelo, TX. Family asks that you follow the health precautions set forth for San Angelo.
