Tonja Edwards Roe died on October 21, 2020. She was born to James W. “Dub” and Frankie Edwards on December 31st, 1949.
Tonja attended Ft. Concho Elementary, Edison Jr. High, and graduated from Central High School. She married Grady Roe on August 2, 1969.
Her first job was sorting coupons by hand for M’System Groceries and then she worked for six years at Clinic-Hospital (now Community) as the doctors’ secretary. She then went to San Angelo State School (now State Supported Living Center) where she retired in 2012 after thirty-eight years. She continued to volunteer at the SSLC and was active in animal rescue groups in San Angelo for many years. Tonja and Grady were long-time members of Baptist Temple/ Lifepoint Baptist Church where they served in various ministries over the years. Her final church membership was at Northridge Baptist Church. Tonja was widely known for sending cards for every occasion leading to an active card ministry, being a thoughtful friend, and serving others throughout her life. Her hobbies were crocheting, needlepoint, counted cross stitch, reading voraciously, and loving her numerous fur babies over the years.
Tonja was preceded in death by her parents, sister Cindy Brusenhan, and brother Nigel.
Following a bout of viral pneumonia in Spring 2014, which destroyed her original heart, she was blessed with a transplanted heart in October, 2014, at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Dallas. She will be forever indebted to her donor’s family, the Olsen’s, in Idaho, and the amazing staff at Baylor.
She is survived by her husband Grady Roe of San Angelo, daughter Allyson Crenshaw and husband Terry and grandson T.J., all of Odessa, special friends Ken and Joann Pond, and by numerous cousins.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 am, Tuesday, October 27, 2020 at the Shaffer Funeral Home’s Pioneer Chapel. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to San Angelo State Supported Living Center, Box 38, Carlsbad, TX 76934; PAWS at; or any animal rescue group, since Tonja always had a special love for animals. Services are under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home/Grape Creek.

I only knew Tonja for the last two years from church but during that time I came to love and appreciate her very much. Tonja was the one who sent out frequent messages to many of us reminding us to pray for those who were sick or suffering. She was the one who kept us connected and caring for each other. Although her own health was somewhat frail, she was always thinking of others rather than herself. Her motivation for this kind of caring was her love of the Lord. She was a good example of Christian service and putting others first. She is already missed here on earth but no doubt enjoying the presence of the Lord in a new way. - Steve Nelle

Sending our love and prayers from Mongolia. I cherish the beautiful blanket she made me before we moved here. She was an amazing Sunday School teacher and encourager.
