Obituary for Marlene La Thel Coleman

Marlene Coleman peacefully passed away in her home November 2, 2020 in San Angelo, Texas. Marlene was born in Luling, Texas August 8, 1932 to her parents, Edward Nelson Terry and Brittie Elvie (Evelyn) Berryman.
Her young years were spent in Luling, running through her grandmother’s boarding house, playing with her sister Venetia and their sister/cousin Terry. In junior high and early high school, her family lived on the Pyote Rattlesnake Bomber Army Airbase. Marlene had fond memories of this time. She remembered their house was near the front gate. She and her sister Ventia would lie in bed, looking out the bedroom window at the lighted gate, watching the sentries stopping vehicles. There were German prisoners on this base, some worked as bakers. The German bakers would make all the birthday cakes for the people on base. Her mother worked in payroll, upstairs in one of the hangers. One day when a welder caught part of the hanger on fire, the clerks were forced to evacuate. Half way down the staircase, her mother remembered the base payroll was on her desk, waiting for distribution. Against orders, she rushed back up the stairs and rescued the payroll from the oncoming fire. The office workers cheered as she ran down the stairs with the payroll briefcase. Marlene was proud of her hero mother, that day.
After high school graduation, Marlene attended Sul Ross State University, majoring in art and education. Her teaching career took her to Pyote, Texas, Anchorage, Alaska and back to Pecos, Texas in 1967, where she taught English and Journalism. She loved teaching and her students. Marlene retired from teaching in 1993. She will be remembered for her dedication and caring manner.
Marlene is survived by her four children, Kerry Armistead and wife Christine, San Angelo, Texas. Clifton Armistead, Monahans, Texas. Renee Grootenboer, Adelaide, Australia.
