Obituary

Marilee Leuenberger Holmes, 1949-2020

"Be still, and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
Marilee Holmes passed peacefully on June 22, 2020. Born in Kermit on November 23, 1949, she was a resident of Odessa and member of First Baptist Church most of her life. After graduating from Odessa High School, she attended Odessa College, Texas Tech University, Sul Ross State University, and The University of Texas Permian Basin to complete her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Education. She married Son Holmes in 1974 and their love has continually grown for 45 years. Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy and her passion for education was evident in her first teaching position in 1972 and continued through her retirement from ECISD in 2018.

She & Son moved to Robert Lee, Texas in 2019 to enjoy the country life. Marilee’s kindness and love for God was appreciated by family & friends of all ages. She truly exemplified Christ in all her decisions and actions.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Bert & Betty Leuenberger and son-in-law, Burke Lewis, Sr. Those who will miss her dearly are her husband, W. L. “Son” Holmes; son William “Trey” Holmes (wife Kara, children Kate, Justin, and Alisa) of Fort Worth, TX; daughter LeeAnne Holmes Lewis (children, Marilee and Burke) of Canton, TX; daughter Tanya Denton (husband Kermit, children Drew and Nevada) of Washington, OK; daughter Sonya Vanderburg (husband Andy, daughter Taylor) of Norman, OK; daughter, Ronna Mowdy (husband Ken, children Jason, Justin, Lauren and Reid) of Norman, OK; sisters Charlene Toulouse (Rand) of Benbrook, TX, and Joanne Sutton (Dave) of Custer, SD; and other family members.
A Memorial for Marilee will be scheduled at a later date. A gift in honor of Marilee’s passion for all childrens’ education can be made to the KinderFrogs School at Texas Christian University, a program for children with special needs. We will miss sweet Marilee. We all went to First Baptist Church, Odessa and was my babysitter when I was very young. I later had the privilege of student teaching at the same school where she was a teacher, and then later we were both principals in Ector County ISD. She was one of the first to visit after I lost my father, which was not very long after she lost her father. She had a special type of empathy that no one else had in that moment, and I'll never forget her being there. She was an influence on me from my youngest years to my later years as a principal, and I will never forget her kindness, grace, and positivity. -Laurie Wyman Hitzelberger

Thinking of Marilee brings back such special memories, not only in the church setting (youth department, youth choir, etc.), but the times she would babysit for the Wyman clan. We were all glad to see her arrive at our house - the parents for a period of time away from the kids and kids for a time away from parents. I can only imagine what a wonderful teacher and principal she must have been. She will be greatly missed. - JoAnn Wyman

I taught at LBJ while Marilee was interim principal as well as principal. One memory I have that shows her kind heart was that she emphasized to us teachers that we did not need to continue a phone call if a parent was angry and yelling. At meetings she made sure everyone present treated one another with respect and kindness. She was a peacekeeper and tried to help everyone be heard while doing so in the calmest way possible. She was soft spoken and gentle. Her love for people was evident. My comfort is that I know she is now with her Lord whom she loved so much. Prayers for the entire family.

Marilee was a wonderful educator who truly loved children. I had the privilege of working with her for five years. She was one of the most supportive administrators I encountered in my years of teaching. It was my honor to work with her and especially to call her my friend.
