Obituary

James “Wayne” Smith passed away May 25, 2019 at the age of 78. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carolyn; children Marsha Taylor, Kim Philley and husband Tim of Robert Lee, TX; Stephen Smith and partner Robert Cordero of Palm Springs, CA; beloved grandchildren, Tessa and Lydia Tritt, Sarah Headrick and husband Rob, and Logan Philley; sisters Nancy Sweatt and Judy Wiechman; sisters-in-law Jean and Marie Tillman. Preceded in death are parents James O. Smith and Ethel Wardlow Smith, step mother Reatha Tillman Smith, brothers Bobbie and Larry Tillman. Wayne touched many others throughout his life and his extended family reaches far and wide.

Wayne was born in Stantonville, TN on October 11, 1940. His parents relocated to Washington, IL when he was a young boy, and he quickly made new friendships that lasted throughout his life. He was a graduate of Washington Community High School, and attended Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, TN. Wayne returned to Washington to marry his high school sweetheart and raise his very own family.

Wayne started his career at Stinnett Window Co, in East Peoria, IL. Mr. Stinnett saw great potential in Wayne, grooming him to become one of the final remaining partners in the business. His career then took him to Cleveland, Ohio. After retirement, Wayne and Carolyn moved to Robert Lee, TX where they made great friends and enjoyed time with family.

Those who knew Wayne would agree he had a great passion for music and cars of all kinds. The greatest thing that can be said about Wayne is he was a wonderful man who led by Christ’s example. He welcomed so many into his home without condition, and each and every one felt his love and compassion.

A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 29th at the Southside Church of Christ, followed by a luncheon for family and friends at The Lady Of Guadalupe in Robert Lee, Texas. Services are under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home/ Sherwood Way.

The family would like to thank the Robert Lee Care Center for their loving care and concern for Wayne. Honors to his memory may be made to the Robert Lee Care Center, Robert Lee Volunteer Fire Department, Robert Lee E.M.S., or the Southside Church of Christ of Robert Lee, TX.
