Obituary for Richard Lamar Whitworth

Print
Beloved husband and father, Richard “Rick” Lamar Whitworth, 70, of San Angelo was called into the service of our Lord at 9:20 PM, Wednesday, January 23, 2019. Rick was born in Brownwood, Texas on March 8, 1948 to L.H. and Josephine Whitworth. He moved to San Angelo at the age of 4 years, right after the T.B. epidemic. He graduated from San Angelo Central High School, class of 1966. He then attended the University of Texas for a degree in engineering to work for NASA. Unfortunately, the program was cut two years after he started college, so he decided to go back and do what he had been doing since he was 15 years old, radio. Rick designed, built, and maintained radio stations all over. In his time, he had owned 14 radio stations between Galveston Island all the way to Fredericksburg, Oklahoma. Rick loved to fly planes. He even owned his own, a 1966 Cherokee Piper. In the eyes of his family, he is considered a hero. One of his flying trips was cut short in the mid 70’s as a plane he was on went down near Brownwood, TX. Rick pulled the owner of the plane, the other passenger, and himself to safety before the plane burned. Rick continued flying and picked up many more hobbies along the way. Including but not limited to, motorcycling, boating, trains, driving 18 wheelers, being a HAM Radio Operator, photography, and serving our community. In the 90’s Rick and his wife, Kathie moved permanently back to the Coke and Tom Green county area. On December 6, 2002, Rick put KCSA 97.1 LP FM (formerly, 95.7) on the air. In his time at San Angelo, Rick has also been on the Board of Directors for the Railroad Museum, on the committee of Concho Christmas Celebration, and was the founder of Downtown Movie Night. Rick and Kathie raised 5 children, Dr. Richard (Richie) Lamar Whitworth JR. and wife Nicole Whitworth of Belton, TX, Khristopher Ehl of Bronte, TX, Monica Joy Schramm of Bedford, TX, Rebecca Black and husband Ron Black of Sweetwater, TX, and their grand-daughter Jessie Ehl of San Angelo, TX. Rick Whitworth is survived by his loving wife, Kathie of San Angelo and their children, 9 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at 6 PM in the lobby of the Cactus Hotel. All are welcome.
Arrangements are under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home/Sherwood Way.
