Obituary for Delbert Gene Fustos

Delbert Fustos, 89, of San Angelo passed away on November 26, 2018. Delbert was born on May 21, 1929 in Omaha, Nebraska. He was married 68 years to Winnie, who he met on his assignment in England. He called her his Duchess.
Delbert is preceded in death by his daughter, Bootsy and his son, Glenn.
He is survived by his wife, Winnie; daughter, Jeanine Fustos “who always called her father her hero”, and his beloved dog, Addo. Brother Larry Kaiser and wife Harriette, sisters Janette Leventhal and Joyce Jackson. Special sisters in law Margaret and Marie. Numerous nieces and nephews all over the world and great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. Special friends Zeke Zellmer and Bill Fichter. Special couple who he loved like his own children Brenda and Ron Hardy Jr.
He served 28 years in the Air Force. He served overseas on assignments in England, North Africa and Germany. After retirement he attended ASU and received a Business degree then went to work for Dillard’s for 10 years. He volunteered in adult literacy, then turned his interest towards C.A.S.A. Delbert travelled all over Texas advocating for children in the program and was instrumental in several of them being adopted. He had a passion for photography. Delbert’s overseas assignments and vacations in Australia, South Africa and on Alaskan Cruise afforded him the opportunity to photograph a wide variety of subjects, he was passionate for. He was an avid member of the San Angelo Photography Club until his illness.
He loved wildlife and nature and it was not unusual to find him walking the paths of the state parks with a camera in hand looking for unusual shots. He loved music and loved to sing and would burst into song on any occasion. Delbert had a wonderful voice! His favorite song was “Would You Like To Swing On A Star”. He sang this to his own children and to all the children that was a part of his life, many of who called him Gruncle.
You are swinging on your star now my darling, keep a spot for us.
Special thanks to Dr. John Harvey for the compassionate care through the years. Special thanks to Hospice of San Angelo and their dedicated caring nurses especially Cindy and Miranda. Special thanks to dear friend, Ann Schuckert, for being there for us and ready to help at a moment’s notice.
A Vigil service will be held on Friday, November 30, 2018 at 7:00 pm at Shaffer Funeral Home’s Sherwood Way Chapel. Mass will be held Saturday December 1, 2018 at 10:00 am at Holy Angels.
To know him was to love him.
In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of San Angelo, Alzheimer’s Foundation, or your charity of choice.
