Milton “Pat” Potter, 90, passed away Sunday, December 20. In the days prior to his passing, he celebrated his 90th birthday, went gambling, and spent his last moments surrounded by family at home.
Pat was born December 10, 1930 in Opp, Alabama to Guy and Bama Potter. He spent the first seventeen years of his life in Alabama before joining the Armed Forces. While in the Army, he was posted in allied-occupied Germany for two years as part of the 1st Infantry Division. A few years later he enlisted in the Air Force.
While stationed at Carswell AFB in Fort Worth, TX he met Evelyn “Edie” Vecera on a blind date. A year later, on Aug. 24, 1957 Pat married Edie in Megargel, TX. The couple began their life in Vernon, TX before moving to Eglin AFB in Florida. Pat was later stationed with his growing family to Yokota AFB in Japan.
Pat became an instructor at Goodfellow AFB and moved with his family to San Angelo in 1967. He served in Vietnam in 1970-71 and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Military Merit Medal. Pat retired from a successful career in the Air Force as a Master Sergeant in 1974 after dedicating a total of 25 years of service to his country.
Pat then worked for the City of San Angelo for ten years at the Mathis Field Airport as a security officer. Upon his retirement from the city in 1988, he served many years volunteering at Community and Shannon Hospitals and was named Community Hospital’s Volunteer of the Year in 2014.
Pat and Edie have been important members of the San Angelo community for decades and have fond memories of their western dancing club and spending time at the Community Health Club.
Pat enjoyed travelling, dancing, fishing, and gambling. His favorite travel spots included Hawaii, Alaska, Cape Cod and anywhere with a casino. Pat enjoyed fishing with his sons and spending time eating good food with family, especially breakfast.
He was a proud husband, dad, Papa, veteran, storyteller, dancer, and gambler and he will be missed greatly.
Pat is survived by his wife of 63 blissful years, Edie Potter of San Angelo; sister, Foye Jackson of Baker, FL; sister-in-law Josephine Burns of Burleson, TX; sister-in-law Julia Vecera of Crowley, TX; his children Dale Potter, Ramona (Randy) Wessels, Kim (Allen) Gully, Deanna Potter of San Angelo and Duane (Yvonne) Potter of Grand Prairie, TX and many loving grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Donnie, Hinton, and Hollis; his sister Lois Tisdale and his daughter-in-law Lori Rascoe Potter.
A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, January 9, at 2 pm at the Lake Nasworthy Boat Club located at 3617 country club road, San Angelo, Texas 76904. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Meals for the Elderly or a charity of your choice.
