Obituary for Walter Dean Rauch

Walter D. Rauch, 82, of San Angelo, TX went to be with his lord and savior on October 21, 2018. A memorial service will be held Thursday, October 25, at 2:00 pm at Immanuel Baptist Church in San Angelo. Services are under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home/Sherwood Way.

Walter was born in El Dorado, KS on June 7, 1936 to Ralph and Vera Fooshee Rauch. The family moved to Idaho when he was 8 where his father worked on a farm. Walter left home at the young age of 15 and traveled to California and eventually made his way to West Texas. He became a father in 1961 to daughter Margaret De’Niece. He then met and soon married his wife, Mary Lynn Fisher on July 14th, 1962 in Lorenzo, Texas. The two moved to northwest Washington State where he worked at an aluminum plant and traded horses and sold baby calves. Two children were born there, Michael Glen in 1968 and Leah Renee in 1971.

Walter did not enjoy the rain of the northwest and moved the family back to Texas in 1974, where he and Mary spent the next 29 years. Walter went back to his roots and began farming and baling hay. He was extremely well known and well liked around many counties, and became the city judge for some time. He loved going to Friday night football games, his kids’ track meets, Lion’s Club activities, men’s breakfast at church, and volunteering any spare time for the community. He was a hard working man and jack of all trades, loved to buy and sell used cars, and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He ended his working career driving all around the area selling cleaning chemicals and making friends.

Walter and Mary decided to move to San Angelo in 2003 to be closer to some of the grandchildren, where he drove a school bus part time until he retired. He then kept himself busy going to grandkids’ activities, Lions Club and church, and keeping the yard and garden looking pristine.

He was most remembered by his gift of great story telling and sense of humor and loved telling anyone who would listen to his jokes.

He was preceded in death by his parents and older brother Jack. He is survived by his faithful and loving wife of 56 years Mary, daughter Margaret De’Niece Williams, son Michael Rauch, daughter Leah Rauch, 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family especially wishes to thank St. Gabriel’s Hospice for their excellent and compassionate care of Walter. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in Walter’s honor to St. Gabriel’s Hospice, 1100 NE Loop 410 Suite 220, San Antonio, TX 78209.
