Thomas Albert Pickard was born to Eleanor Fritz Pickard and Thomas Welfer Pickard in Greenfield (Pittsburgh) Pennsylvania on March 19, 1923. His youth was flanked by siblings: Helen, Grace, Virginia, Eileen, and Bill.

He married Sara (Sally) McClean on June 9. 1943. They were inseparable for 71 years, with the exception of three years spent in the Army during WWII, until her death November 9, 2014.

His career began at Westinghouse Electric Corporation at age 18, retiring after 40 years of service. During his career he worked as an apprentice draftsman, sales engineer, drafting supervisor and drafting manager.

He was father to Linda (Knightstep), Tom and wife Debbie. Foster parent to Denise (Coonrod), Grampa to Amy (Briscoe), Christy (Pickard) and Jennifer (Pope). Great Grampa to Olive Briscoe.

Most of his life he worked his regular job and in addition tinkered with ideas for new gadgets and architecture. He loved golf, bridge, and travel.

In his youth, he was always the last one picked to play on a team sport and the first to be sought for innovative and often mischievous ideas. He was the brains of the outfit.

During the war years he was known simply as "Engineer", which was printed in large letters on his field jacket. He was assigned to the 10th Armored Division, 55th Armored Engineer Division, assigned to the 90th Armored Calvary Reconnaissance Battalion. His time was spent in Belgium, Luxembourg, France and Germany both building and demolishing bridges throughout the Battle of the Bulge.

After shoveling snow in Buffalo, New York for 30 years, he and Sally moved to Round Rock, Texas at the urging of Westinghouse in 1975. It as here that he retired. 16 years later he and Sally moved for the last time to San Angelo to live with Linda. After almost 30 years in San Angelo, may he rest in peace.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, July 28th, 2020 at First Presbyterian Church. Arrangements are by Shaffer Funeral Home.
