Nina was a retired Physical Education and Special Education teacher. She and her husband, Jack, moved to Robert Lee from Odessa in 1986. Jack, who was athletic director of the Ector County public schools for many years, often teased her about “just quitting” after 36 years before she had time to decide if she would like teaching or be any good at it.
As a member of the Coke County Retired Teachers Association, she received the “Award of Distinction”, volunteer service award, and appreciation award for unusual service to TRTA in outstanding contributions in time and service on volunteer basis.
Nina and Jack were avid “fisherpersons”. Nina holds the record for the largest crappie caught in Lake Ivie. This crappie was caught in March 1993.
In the Robert Lee UMW unit, Nina served as president, secretary, and as chairwoman on numerous committees. She received the Special Mission Recognition Award and Pin in 1992. In 1993, she was chosen as Outstanding Layperson for the Robert Lee United Methodist Church 1992. She also served on the Administrative Board, the Pastor Parish Relations Committee, the chairperson of the Christian Unity and Interreligious Concerns committee, as well as many other committees for her church. Nina’s favorite role in the church was “bag lady.” She would prepare an envelope of quiet toys, stickers, games, and candy for every child who attended Sunday morning worship service. As soon as she was seated in the sanctuary, the children would come and hug her and choose from the bag she was carrying. Those hugs were very special.
Graveside Services are scheduled for 11:30 a.m., Saturday, May 22, 2021 at the Robert Lee Cemetery in Robert Lee, Texas. Services are under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home/ Robert Lee.
In lieu of flowers, Nina requested to donate to a charity of your choice or to the Jack and Nina Brewer Scholarship fund, San Angelo Area Foundation, 221 South Irving Street, San Angelo, Texas 76903.
