I began my funeral service career in Big Spring, Texas while attending Howard College becoming interested in funeral service. I then attended Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science.  Upon graduation, I began work at Ellis Funeral Home in Midland, Texas for about five years before purchasing the Newby Funeral Homes in Bronte and Robert Lee in 1977.  All these years my first goal was service to the families of the Concho Valley in a way that would benefit them no matter what type of service they desired. With that thought in mind a number of years ago I decided it was time to give back not only to the community’s I served but to the families of Texas and my profession.  I became heavily involved with the Texas Funeral Directors Association, first serving on the Board of Directors for the West Texas Region. Then going forward and serving at the State level being elected by my colleagues to serve as State President in 2005.  During this time I have served on numerous committees but what I have enjoyed most is serving on and several times chairing our State Legislative Committee.  During the past 20 + years I helped co-author and pass the current State Law for cremation which now serves as a model for other states.  I have been and continue to be very proud of our Association serving thru good times and bad and continue to look forward trying to better the profession to the benefit of the families we serve.

Della Shaffer, Business Operations Manager

Della Shaffer joined the Shaffer Funeral Home staff in June of 1996.  She has worked in many areas of the funeral home, working side by side with her husband, Gary Shaffer.  In 2000, they opened Shaffer Funeral Home/Pioneer Memorial Park & Crematory in Grape Creek and then in 2011 they opened the Sherwood Way location in the heart of San Angelo. With the growth of the business, Della has taken on the responsibilities of Business Operations Manager.  The added responsibilities of this is position keeps her in the office most of the time but she is still available to help on funeral services and with personalization of services.

When I was 45 years old my mother was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer.  I spent the next four months caring for her until she passed away in October 2002.  Having raised six children who were all now grown, life for me seemed empty.  I decided to go out and start looking for a job.  I took a part time job at Shaffer Funeral Home filing insurance.  Within a month I realized that I knew my true calling was to be a funeral director.  With the guidance and mentoring of Gary Shaffer, I was able to fulfill my goal. My job is a ministry to me and I feel so fortunate to have a job that I love and can help others at the same time.  I am blessed daily by the families I serve here at Shaffer Funeral Home and my life has been touched deeply by each family that has come through the doors.  They have made lasting impressions on my heart and will be remembered always.
